Love and desire are the spirit’s wings to great deeds – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Have you ever watched the wings of a butterfly? Or that of any bird? Don’t you feel that they are too delicate, fragile and vulnerable? But don’t be mistaken by their external appearance! For these wings know how to try, struggle, strive and…survive! After all, these wings have dreams, hopes and aspirations and a will to endure, persist and sustain. It is because of their zest and zeal that they undertake flights of fancy and succeed; For aren’t upheavals a part and parcel of life?
Be like the bird who, pausing in her flight awhile on boughs too slight, feels them give way beneath her, and yet sings, knowing she hath wings. – Victor Hugo
Isn’t there a striking similarity between the wings and the soul? Both of them are pretty, look feeble, but have an enduring and persisting strength. Both of them long for love, affection and fondness; both of them seek solace and peace and yet, both of them have strength of mountains. They are both like a mariner who has to move on despite the rebellious sea, harsh winds and darkness. They may falter, they may fail, they may go on a hiatus, but they will never halt. And they have the patience, perseverance and firmness to keep sailing, since they have aims, goals and vision.
‘The Delicate Wings’ is a collection of one hundred poems which talk about the struggles, the conflicts and the efforts required to maintain the delicate balance between the grief and the desire to soar, the downfalls and the confidence to rise once again and the several ways and approaches to control losing to pessimism and disenchantment. A bud does not know that it will bloom into a flower someday and spread fragrance and cheer in the world. A dark night on a new moon day does not know that one day it shall shimmer and radiate. But then, if one has the endurance, one shall realize that everything is well-ordained and is being planned by Him for our wellbeing. So one should keep the spirit of optimism alive and keep surging ahead…
