Embers of Light is the story of some courageous people who take on angels and demons, travel across parallel universes, stand up before the Lord of Death, challenge the queen of destiny, rise above every fear, even the fear of god and do what their heart felt was right. This is how the author, Abhishek Gupta (Ab Hi) introduces his readers to the first part of his trilogy – The Sacred Secret.
The author is an intelligent chap, who very well understands how to catch hold of the audiences’ (i.e. book readers and reviewers) mischievous thought bubbles and poking critique questions and therefore, gives them a food of thought straightway in his initial pages of the book. He then raises a series of questions related to a sensitive issue, such as ‘God’ and contrasting thoughts about believing him, trusting him and following him.

He picks a stark reality of the human lives and questions what does one do when rosy answers in religious books about the existence of god fail to match the realities of the world creating a chain of questions and doubts? He questions if faith in that supernatural power is the only answer to every question or if we (the human race) are even allowed to doubt its existence? He asks what if he – ‘the God’ does not seem righteous, then should we surrender ourselves blindly to the faith or dare to stand up to the supreme power?

All the questions, more than enough to concentrate the brain cells into his enigma, the enigma of the ‘God’ and to be peculiar; the enigmatic power of, ‘Embers of Light’.

The story is about the clan of ordinary people blessed with extraordinary powers. The people are identified as – the Vaashis and their powers are termed as ‘reevan’ powers. They have a history of their own and as their past comes in front of them, they identify them as the Royal Devil. Now, the Vaashis are concerned about a prophecy coming true that might endanger their existence. In order to save their souls from the prevailing darkness, what they need is light – the Embers of Light.

As the cover page of the book deciphers they are the selected five who stand strong against a symbol shped ‘Y’, a sign that Vaashis knew is representing – the Royal Devil. The story outlines how the responsibility to save the world has been laid on their shoulders. With interesting yet thrilling events and occurrences the author helps the readers to find out ‘the sacred secret’ (refer to the title byline).

Nevertheless, this is not all, as we unveil what the sacred secret is it has become vulnerable.

It not only entertains the readers with catchy names and picturesque descriptions of the props (including property, surroundings and materials) but it also motivates the readers as the heroes of the story decide to pursue the Royal devil.

You may be thinking why were these, five human being picked from the core of population, well, the answer is obvious, they have the power of light in them to fight against all odds and hence, named – the Embers of Light. What will they do? What are they destined to do? Will they be able to catch hold of ‘Y’? Will they conquer, the Royal Devil? Does he exist at all? Why has he come back? What is his purpose of sudden reappearance? Is this all how it is looking or there are still more sheets to be uncovered? You will get the answers to all these questions as you read this amazing collection of twenty -six chapters.

The story teaches the readers that we should learn to separate our faith from situation. We should believe in god for time may not be able to distribute equally or even fairly but it still gives everyone both happiness and pain. It gives an inspirational message that we should believe in our inner self and do not lose hope despite the bad situations and do not blame ‘God’ for everything that is not according to our wish or will. He advocates that if you wish to meet an angel, the messenger of god (or face of God for some) to make your wishes come true, think again. Go by my words, he has solid reasons to suffice.

I loved the strong characterization of the story because of their attractive and mysterious names and how the author did managed to balance a whole bunch of characters like a Hollywood flick. Kudos! I did not face any problem at all in visualizing these characters (though, I forgot their head count, somewhere in between the pages) because of their strong personalities that he had created in my mind, right from the beginning. I liked how his characters shared a bonding with each other and had an equation of relationship with every single persona.

The story is fast paced and binding. His writing style is simple and to some extent hypnotizes the readers with words to create the magic, an important ingredient to make fiction believable and I congratulate him for being successful in accomplishing the purpose. However, in my opinion, the cover page could have been more expressive and eye-catching.

My Recommendation

Do not go by cover (for this novel, at least). There is a lot to offer and is hidden in this dark box, say it a mystery box and you will find embellishments to behold. Recommended.

If you are an avid reader of fiction genre, you should not miss reading this. A promising debut, by a debutant writer. Grab your copy now.

Waiting for the second part of trilogy – the eighth color of rainbow. Again, enough to catch the eyeballs and indulge in visualization till the time, you have the copy in your hand.

About the Book

It is best when some secrets remain hidden and some stories remain untold. But is destiny too kind to let this be.

A strange Y-shaped symbol in the sky terrifies a mysterious, alien race living secretly on Earth for centuries, and changes forever the fate of five human beings; a Brazilian street fighter, an American cop, a Chinese karate instructor, a Russian environmentalist and an Indian ad maker. Meanwhile, a geek in NYC is amazed to see his dreams grow more and more bizarre each day and meets an angel who isn’t conventional in any way.

This is the story of how their destinies intertwine.

They could have had heaven but they dis not take it. The demons were against them and so were angels but that did not scare them. Destiny had already ruled against them but they chose to rebel. Embers of Light is the story of five ordinary humans who chose the path of light over and above everything else…even God.
