Book Excerpt

Me ‘n’ Her – A strange feeling by Rikky Bhartia is an attempt by the author to make people (his fans and the book readers) understand the difference between Me n Herfriendship, infatuation and the divine feeling – love; something that today’s young generation feels confusing enough to catch hold of with clarity. Ironical it is that how those who get the love in their life do not even know how to appreciate it.

Using the platform of the story of Harsh and Janvi, he advocates that ‘love’ is about sacrifices and suggests lovers to have faith in their love and wait patiently for the right time to come. Right time, according to him, is the time decided by our destiny for us. Going by his thoughts (which is indeed true), we are merely puppets of destiny and that our love life is governed by our destiny. He admits that love and destiny are correlated. He says, … if there is love in our stars, it will come with time, at its own pace and following its own discourse.

Initially, I perceived that he is a pessimistic person (with respect to his thoughts about the strange feeling of love) because, I, personally believe that true lovers tend to carve out their own destinies rather than waiting for the love to arrive and knocking doors. They, in my opinion, step ahead and reach out to their love with open hands. But, he proved my perception wrong with the story. He is a person with complete optimism who carries an opinion that instead of fighting with your destiny (which will bear no results), befriend it along the path and you will be blessed love.

The book starts with a detailed author bio. I felt that this gives a chance to set your mind frame according to the author’s persona which in turn becomes a crucial decisive factor in appreciating the efforts put in by the author while drafting the story.

Further, he has made a successful attempt to attract reader’s attention starting right from a detailed dedication page. He has used a friendly tone to thank the important persons. I liked how he has avoided merely mentioning the names and chose to provide us with a bird’s eye view of their efforts. This benefitted him by imparting a sense of closeness and a hidden attachment before reading.

He starts with a promise to sensitize the readers about some unnecessary evils creeping in our lives, in the name of lifestyle such as – drinking (boozing), heavy expenditures, smoking and highlight their irrelevance. It is something that the young brains and blood would easily connect with and that too instantly.

The story is based on the backdrop of reunion of two friends after a long gap of 8 years and develops as they both share their past. The essence of friendship and a strong bonding shared between them was easily recognisable and identifiable as we read friendly, free flowing conversation happening between the two. Their conversation carries a blend of various textures such as joy, acknowledgement, teasing, leg-pulling, understanding, sharing and consoling, similar to what we all may or might have experienced on re-uniting with a long-lost friend.

Harsh opens his heart to his friend and shares about how he is missing his love so much in his life, such that he is drowning himself to booze. His friend is left amazed on how his friend who was initially an opponent of boozing and smoking has chosen these over love and that too when he is a successful man, today.

He forces Harsh to speak his heart out and vent off his feelings and fill the missing links from past years. Finding a new friend supports Harsh and he gives in to share his strange feelings.

Characterization is strong as we perceive distinct personalities in all the key characters including Harsh, Janvi and their supportive friends – the best buddies. Harsh is an intelligent, smart, sensible, patient, caring, sensitive guy, who has a head and a heart and very well knows how to put them into work. He always waits for Janvi to speak, notices her minute details, never leaves her alone, makes occassions memorable for her – in short, a guy whom every girl would dream about. Janvi is a soft, docile, timid, sensitive, moody and somewhat a crazy girl. She sometimes felt stupid to me because of her mood swings and strange behaviour towards Harsh. It read her to be a mean gal.

He has a charismatic and captivating style of writing that transports you across scenes. A tinge of poetry and bollywood songs put here and there imparted a rosy romantic feeling. No doubt, Rikky has very cautiously showcased his power of pen and skills to write poetry.

An enjoyable read.

A journey of two souls from coming close to separation, guided by destiny but ruled by love – A strange feeling, indeed.
