My Review

Rape, a scary word in itself which needs no introduction today always leaves a trail of unanswered questions and people have their own answers based on individualistic perceptions. And, here is how the author perceives it.

Yes, an attempt by a male author to voice the agony of a female victim. Victim? Didn’t it sound as a weak introduction for a strong character – a woman? Yes, it might seem to be this way but we are not yet tended strong enough to stand tall with such scars eclipsing us and to be precise our beauties – internal and external both. This is an author’s attempt to raise a voice against the ill deeds of so-called strong genders. Is reinforcing masculinity a true synonym or say a symbol of humanity?

This fictional work starts with a heart-tearing description of the preyed upon girl. The description was so powerful that I could experience my goose bumps rising. It was really frightening experience reading those lines. I was feeling as if I was myself bearing that pain within me. L God bless those who actually have to go through this traumatic phase. The pain didn’t subside here rather a strange fear engulfed me! As the author started building up the plot I felt as if I was back in my college life and started living Akriti’s life.

The structuring of chapters and selection of words was a total surprise package. It makes the book stand apart from the likes on the shelves. Sometimes, it happens that a sudden break in the flow of the events forces the readers to jump to the next chapter, it leads to a discontinuity. Similarly, over usage of not so popular terms, breaks the flow in reading but when you are guided by Gaurav sir, you can subtract the worries and multiply the engagement factor. He divides the story in logical being added to his chunks and adds on the logical reasoning quotient. You must be thinking why am I using this mathematical terminology. This is because the author is an experienced mathematics teacher and is well informed about how to juggle and mingle with these magic wands of his expertise.

This is author’s second publication after Love @ Air Force. I liked reading Rapescars more than the previous one. Reason was as I had highlighted in above paragraphs in detail. With more feathers being added to his cap, I would love to read more from the author’s desk.

This story is about a beautiful girl who is scarred with the taboo of being raped. The author takes an unusual approach and attempts to suggest an out-of-box solution for countering the occurrences of rapes. Though, at times, my thinking was not in line with what the characters had outlined but then, everyone has their own way of attending the call. Talking about what he chose, it is a daring attempt and I personally think not many of the girls would choose this dreadful solution. But, having said this, if done, it will keep a check on the alarming rate of such incidents. I was very much touched with the example of a forced rape and couldn’t stop crying. I will not leak out the details as it was the touchiest moment and an eye opener as well for all. The police-station and court-room proceedings were heart-breaking. L

The best thing that I like about Gaurav’s writings is that they are multi-faceted. Usually authors pick up one tone and one message in one story but his stories have multiple implications and this is one more addition to the wagon. In addition to the suggestion based plot, he attempts to raise an alarm to identify early signals, check on indirect messages, dual meaning talks, hidden intentions inadequate body language and identifying the lines. He sensitizes the readers with the importance of sharing and talking with parents and makes the canvas larger by extending full support from the parents.

I conclude with a comment on the book cover. In my opinion, it could have been more expressive. I found it too crowded and loaded. Moreover, the website name used on the book cover was not mentioned in the text. It would have been more influential if added within the text or in case of sponsorship, a disclaimer updating the readers about the same would have been influential. Though, I do not qualify it to be a disturbing element in the success of the book.

A must read for college students and parents alike.
