Prabir Kumar Datta was born in Barasat a town near Kolkata in 1953 in a family migrated from East Bengal. His father and grandfather both were freedom fightersPrabir Kumar Datta Their family originally hailed from Bager hat subdivision of Khulna district of the then East Pakistan which is now Bangladesh. In early life he had to face a lot of adversities, having spent his childhood in a remote village near Bongaon sub division in the district north 24 Parganas of West Bengal, India. He was the eldest among five sons of his parents with an elder sister.

He used to write from his childhood in school magazine. Apart from writing, Football and Cricket were his hobby. Poems and short stories were his favorite area. From the childhood he has seen various facets of life very closely that has made him a close observer of not only the events taking place around him but also the people and nature. All those have come in his writing time and again.

A brilliant student in Physics from Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, Narendrapur, he had to take up a job at the early age of 21 in a government insurance company. There he completed fellowship (the highest qualification in insurance) and rose to senior position in due course. But he was never feeling that a job in Insurance Company was his cup of tea and at last he took voluntary retirement at the age of 50. He ran a partnership investigation company for two years thereafter and later joined a renowned all India coaching institute as professor in physics. He has left that job also after 5 years and at present engaged in teaching physics to students for IIT admission test and writing on physics and literature at the same time.

A lot of his poems and short stories have been published in practically all leading magazines of Kolkata. His two novels have already been published in Bengali and one English novel (The Rainbow Days) has been published internationally by Partridge from Penguin House. Apart from literature, his two volume book, both in Bengali and English, on Physics for XI XII students is being published very shortly by the most leading text book publisher of Kolkata.

He is a lover of literature and physics at the same time and is involved in many related activities. He is an active member of Nikhil Bharat Banga Sahitya Sammelan, an all India literary organization originally founded by Rabindra Nath Tagore. He is also fond of delivering lecture on various subjects. He is an avid reader too. His other hobby is traveling.
